The New Ulm Police Department reported Wednesday that Matthew Dennis Smith, of St. Paul, reportedly walked up to a driver’s vehicle at approximately 9 p.m. Tuesday and punched the driver in the face, unprovoked. Smith then reportedly left the scene on foot. Later on Tuesday evening, law enforcement agencies in Blue Earth County were made aware that a 2014 white Ford SUV had been stolen from New Ulm. A Lake Crystal Police Officer spotted the stolen vehicle traveling east on Highway 60 at over 100 mph. Deputies located it unoccupied on Highway 169 near the Faribault County. The New Ulm Police Department identified 32-year-old Matthew Dennis Smith of St. Paul as a suspect. A male matching the suspect’s description was walking along Highway 169. Area officers and deputies from Blue Earth and Faribault Counties took Matthew Smith into custody without incident. Matthew Smith has been turned over to the New Ulm Police Department. The firearm has not been recovered at the time of this release.
