The Sleepy Eye City Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday to authorize a temporary, outdoor dining permit agreement with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT). The permit effective immediately, allows the City to permit the use of trunk highway right-of-way area for food and beverage establishments to create outdoor service including tables, chairs and refuse containers. The permit would expire Nov. 2, 2020 or when Executive Order expires, whichever occurs first. Main Street proposed permit areas include 200 feet of space outside Sleepy Eye Coffee Company and 50 feet of space outside Meyer’s Bar & Lounge. By a 4-1 vote with councilor Larry Braun dissenting, opening the Sleepy Eye Water Park and kiddie pool at a date to be arranged, which needed supplies are received. City Manager Bob Elston said many regulations would be followed including sanitizing the pool daily. He said water park shark will not be used. Displaying fireworks on July 4th from Sleepy Eye Lake as a first choice site, motion by councilor Gary Windschitl, seconded by councilor Doug Pelzel.
