Felony theft charges were filed in Brown County District Court Thursday against a 31-year-old Litchfield man and 62-year-old Jackson man for allegedly stealing items at Wal-Mart Supercenter Tuesday. Bail was set at $10,000 for James D. Callendar of Jackson and $5,000 for Christopher W. Schwarze Thursday. Both men were in Brown County Jail custody Thursday afternoon. According to court documents, New Ulm Police were dispatched to Wal-Mart at 4:49 p.m. Tuesday for a report of people stealing items from the store including a lawn mower in a box. Police spotted the suspect vehicle southbound on Westridge Road and stopped it. The driver, Callender, identified himself. The passenger, Schwarze, said he didn’t have any identification but gave his name and date of birth. Callender told police the lawn mower in the back seat was not his. A New Ulm police officer asked for receipts for the items but neither man had any. Police saw many other items in the vehicle that looked new and could be stolen.
