The Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop school board proposed to close the Fairfax school beginning with the 2020-2021 school year. The proposal passed by a 3 – 2 vote with one board member not voting. Action came on a motion and seconded by two Winthrop board members and a Gibbon board member. The two Fairfax board members voted against the proposal. Gibbon board member Kelsey Odegard did not vote on the measure. A public hearing on the closure proposal has been set for 6:30 pm February 4th in the Gibbon gym. The board is expected to make a final decision on the proposal after the hearing. Superintendent Lonnie Seifert said the district is about $550,000 in debt and needs to reduce costs over the next couple of years.
