The Rice County Sheriff’s Office reports that a number of residents have been receiving phone calls from scammers identifying as Sheriff’s deputies stating they are following up on legal action. The scammers state that you failed to appear for jury duty and that the judge has issued a warrant for your arrest. They then offer you the opportunity to pay your fine or bail over the phone by giving them a credit card number. They use former and current Sheriff’s Office staff names as well as current judge’s names in these calls. Authorities urge the public that this is a hoax and that they would never ask for a resident to pay a fine over the phone. They remind the public to never give out any personal information over the phone.
