Fair season is here and that means there will be lots of livestock showings. Nicollet and Sibley County U of M Extension Educator Jason Ertl said that as diseases like African swine fever spread across the globe, biosecurity is important. Ertl said exhibitors have some things to keep in mind to prevent the spread of foreign diseases or other illnesses like staying home if their animals are showing any signs of sickness.

While at the fair, Ertl advises everyone to wash their hands often with soap and water and that exhibitors should not share equipment with other exhibitors. After the fair, Ertl advises exhibitors to isolate pigs for up to 30 days following the show and to disinfect all show equipment. He said any pigs showing signs of illness should be seen by a veterinarian immediately.
