A hands-free cellphone bill is rapidly making its way through the legislature. District 23b representative Jeremy Munson of Lake Crystal said that after closely reading the bill, he is strongly opposed because it promotes voice-to-text messaging. He said studies have shown that voice-to-text can be just as, if not more distracting. The other thing that he opposed is that if you were to cause a collision after sending a text, even if it’s with your voice, this bill increase the criminal penalties, and there is no way of proving that a text was sent by your voice, leaving people with little legal options. Munson said that the State does have a major problem with texting and driving but he doesn’t see this bill as the solution.
