A former Sleepy Eye teacher is facing 10 felony child pornography related charges. St. Mary’s Catholic School notified Sleepy Eye Police of possible child pornography on a computer being used by 31-year-old Neil Kirchoefer in November. The investigation began, and Kirchoefer told Police that he has had a history of sharing pornography online. Sometimes he receives archives but didn’t know what was in it until opened. He stated that he had no intentions of viewing anything illegal. Devices owned by Kirchoefer were turned over to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, where over 1,400 images and 18 movie files containing child pornography were found. St. Mary’s High School Principal Peter Roufs released in a statement that Kirchoefer was placed on unpaid leave immediately after the allegations surfaced and was not allowed access to the school. He resigned shortly thereafter and is no longer employed by the school.
