The New Ulm City Council accepted a donation of $115,000 from Barbra Haroldson to put a splash pad in the City of New Ulm. A splash pad is an aquatic playground that has no standing water and requires no life guards. To complete the project, the Park and Recreation Commission estimates an additional $21,000 is needed, which Park and Rec Director Tom Schmitz believes could possibly be funded by the private sector. Haroldson recently donated a splash pad to the city of Red Wing, and it has been a success in that community. The Park Commission hasn’t settled on a location of the pad, but they narrowed it down to Harmon, Nehls, or Riverside Park, but recommended Harmon Park because it’s the only park with access to a restroom. The Council and the Mayor advised them to consider parking concerns there might be in any location they choose.
