The Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office is cracking down on drivers that violate School Bus Stop Arm Law. This comes after they received several reports of vehicles violating the laws on Blue Earth County Road 17 between Eagle Lake and Mankato. They are reminding drivers that flashing yellow lights mean the school bus is about to stop and you need to start slowing down. Flashing red lights mean that the bus has stopped and is loading or unloading students. By law, if you see yellow or red lights, you need to stop at least 20 feet from the bus, no matter which direction you’re going or what lane you’re in. Kids may run across the street from the opposite side to catch their bus. There is a minimum $500 penalty for violating these laws. Sheriff’s Deputies will be stepping up patrol and enforcing the School Bus Stop Arm law as well as other traffic violations.
