Wanda Gag has been named a recipient of the 2018 Original Art Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the Society of Illustrators. The award recognizes artists whose body of work documents an innovative and pioneering contribution to the field. Gag is most famous for her very first author and illustrator project, Millions of Cats, which was published in 1928. She differed from other children’s book illustrators of her time because she placed text on one page and a single image on another, she integrated the text with the pictures, creating spot art and double-page spreads and using hand lettering with dramatic results.
