Dave Borchert is about to finish up his first week as Police Chief at the New Ulm Police Department. Borchert said he’s very excited to serve in the new position and that former Chief Myron Weiland prepared him for the workload.
Borchert said that one thing he wants to change in the Department is to improve crisis management training for officers. He said that some officers are already trained and are able to train other officers, so that is what they are working on now. Another new addition is that Human Services hired a Community Connector, who is trained with mental health and has a therapy background that will work with officers to improve their response to these types of calls. As chief, he thinks that they can improve in this area locally and as a nation.
