Around 7:30 Tuesday morning, New Ulm Police along with Allina Ambulance were dispatched to a motor vehicle vs pedestrian crash at 1st North and Garden Streets. The pedestrian was identified as 65-year-old Paulette Schmeling of New Ulm. Schmeling was transported to the New Ulm Medical Center via ambulance and then to the Hennepin County Medical Center via helicopter with severe injuries. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 73-year-old Joseph Lameckerof New Ulm. Lamecker was not injured in the crash. An investigation shows that Schmeling was in a crosswalk, walking west across North Garden Street. Speed, alcohol and cell phone usage were not factors in the crash. New Ulm Police were assisted by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office and the Allina Ambulance. They continue to investigate. In a press release issued by the Police, they said this crash marks the 3rd vehicle vs pedestrian crash in the City of New Ulm in the past 45 days. The New Ulm Police Departments reminds all drivers to be observant of their surroundings as they travel. The New Ulm Police Department will continue to work with community partners to ensure safety of those that walk and drive in our community.
