The Minnesota Department of Justice reported that a Fairfax woman has been sentenced to prison for embezzling $540,000 from her former employer. 59-year-old Theresa Linsmeier appeared in U.S. District Court in St. Paul on Tuesday and was sentenced to 27 months in prison for one count of wire fraud and one count of filing a false tax return. According to court documents, Linsmeier was a bookkeeper at Farm Mercantile Incorporated, a hardware store in Fairfax, for 18 years. Linsmeier had access to the business’s bank accounts and was able to write out checks on the company’s behalf. Linsmeier would transfer money to her personal credit cards directly from the bank accounts and cover it up by making false entries into the legder to make it appear as a business expense. She reportedly used the funds for online gambling.
